The job description then went on to mention the responsibilities included in approximately 10 bullet points that each started with words like — driving, owning, ensuring, implementing, overseeing, etc. Followed by responsibilities, it mentioned the competencies required in this role are — business acumen, out of the box thinking, ownership and accountability, influential ability, ability to plan and prioritize, and functional knowledge.

And this is not a stand-alone case. This particular company was just honest about it.

Now, this scares the shit out of me!

Tremendous competition in business and life has increased the focus on productivity exponentially. The agenda to get the maximum amount of work done in the least amount of time and cost is a top priority for everyone — be it an organization, a university or an individual.

You would have noticed the number of books, blogs, podcasts, videos being published on the topic of productivity every day. 4-Hour Work Week (one of my favorites), Deep Work, Essentialism and Linchpin are just the few I have read on this topic.

Is this how our rest of life is going to be? Being in a constant pursuit of improving our physical and mental performance.

So many of my friends, including myself, are overworked and under-satisfied. Because we not only want to grow in their career by delivering even more than what the organization expects, but they also want a loving relationship, a healthy body, and rejuvenating vacations.

We are working nights/weekends, trying to squeeze in a run or a workout whenever possible, embarking on half-planned vacations and spending little or no time with our friends and family. It is just in the hope that one day we will be able to have complete control on our life. We make ourselves believe that “No Pain, No Gain”.

But truly speaking, is there ever going to be an end to this? Would we ever stop wanting to achieve more and be more productive?
